Clinical Somatic Education (CSE) is a simple and effective method for resolving chronic muscular pain in the long term. All muscle action is controlled by the brain. If our muscles are tight, stiff and sore it is as a direct result of what is happening at brain level. As such any attempt to change the function, tension or comfort of our muscles, and to reduce muscular pain must involve the brain. CSE does this by engaging the Sensory Motor Cortex of your brain. The sensory motor cortex is the part of the brain involved in learning how to control and coordinate our muscles and learning new movement. Through a technique called pandiculation, CSE teaches you how to release and relax the tight muscles that cause pain. You will also learn enjoyable Self Care Exercises that you can use anytime. These simple exercises allow you to teach yourself how to keep your muscles relaxed and comfortable for long term pain free movement.



Clinical Somatic Education (also known as Hanna Somatic Education) was developed by Thomas Hanna Ph.D. (1928-1990) He was the founder of the field of Somatics and the Director of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training in Novato, California. In 1970 Hanna was exposed to, and greatly impressed by, the work of Moshe Feldenkrais, an Israeli Physicist, Judoka and Body Educator. Hanna studied with Feldenkrais for several years. He eventually built on Feldenkrais’ work and combined it with all he learned during his time studying Neurology at the University of Miami Medical School. The outcome was his own unique system of Sensory Motor Education which he called Hanna Somatic Education.

CSE can teach you HOW and WHY muscles become chronically tight and cause pain. A condition known in Somatics as Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA).

CSE can teach you how to recognise The Three Brain Reflexes, universal to all vertebrate creatures, which show up in your posture and indicate when you have some SMA. CSE can teach you how to release, relax and lengthen these muscles voluntarily through a simple technique called Pandiculation for PAIN FREE MOVEMENT.

Most other modalities focus on the specific area of pain (eg. neck, back etc.) In CSE we look at the body in its totality, as we understand that pain in one area indicates a larger more systemic pattern of habituated muscular tension. By addressing the whole body, and using full body patterns of movement, we can expect to eliminate the pain and also improve the function of the body as a whole.

Another element that sets CSE apart is the educational component. CSE teaches you how to LOOK AFTER YOURSELF, by teaching you how to regain, maintain and refine your own muscular control. CSE is not therapy, you will be an active participant in the process, continually learning as you move free from pain.
