Sports/Athletics Workshops

Somatics Workshops are a great introduction to the concepts and principles of Somatic Movement and Education. During a workshop participants will learn about;

Sensory Motor Amnesia
The phenomenon of Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) and how it contributes to poor posture, restricted movement and can lead to compensatory movement patterns and injury.

The Three Reflexes
The Three Brain Reflexes that indicate the presence of SMA. How they develop, how to recognise them and how to eliminate them using…

The simple technique of Pandiculation which quickly and easily allows you to regain voluntary control of your muscles for improved posture, flexibility and pain free fluid movement.

Differentiated Movement
Another simple technique that allows participants to deconstruct unhelpful habituated movement patterns for freer movement.

Somatic Self Care Exercises
During a workshop participants will be taught a series of these incredibly effective and enjoyable Self Care Exercises to release, relax and lengthen all the muscles of the body quickly and easily.

Somatic Movement Workshops can be tailored specifically for any Sport or Athletic endeavour. We will select and teach the the most helpful Somatics Self Care Exercises for the particular demands of your sport. These exercises can then be used at any time by participants to release and relax tight muscles, improve movement, increase ROM and greatly reduce the risk of injury.

For example a Workshop for Runners/Track Athletes can be designed to focus on improving gait, stride length and running mechanics.

For Olympic lifters, we can prescribe exercises to improve ankle, hip, shoulder and wrist ROM and also lumbar stability and thoracic extension, for improved comfort and stability in all the positions of the Snatch, Clean & Jerk, Front Squat, Back Squat and Overhead Squat.

For Field athletes we can outline a sequence to improve running mechanics, but also to release all the musculature of the waist and of twisting leading to the ability to change direction quickly, easily and explosively. This will give your athletes an advantage in competition and greatly reduce the incidence of injury.

Any sport can be catered for with Somatic Movement Workshops and all will see immediate improvement in movement which will translate directly to improved performance. After all, have you ever heard an athlete complain that they just move “too well”? Of course not. Improving an athlete’s basic movement and proprioception may just be the quickest and easiest way to improve their performance and reduce their chance of injury.
